Job interview tips to help you make the right impression.

Good preparation is the difference between nerves getting the better of you and walking in feeling confident and ready. At Try Staff we have helped hundreds of candidates across Birmingham and the West Midlands prepare for interviews and land roles they are proud of. You have done the hard work getting noticed, now comes the part that really counts.

Prepare with passive memory, not cramming.

Preparing for an interview does not have to feel stressful. One of the smartest ways to prepare is to tap into something your brain already does naturally: passive memory. That is the information your brain stores in the background, the things you know without consciously thinking about them. Break your prep into small, focused sessions and familiarity builds over time.

1

Research the company

5 minutes

Visit their website or LinkedIn page and learn what they do, their values and any recent updates. If you can, look up your interviewer too.

2

Review your CV

5 minutes

Pick one achievement from your last role that you are proud of. It will come to mind easily in conversation.

3

Study the job advert

5 minutes

Highlight the main skills and qualities the employer is looking for.

4

Match your experience

5 minutes

Prepare a few short, relevant examples that show how you meet those requirements. Keep them concise.

By spreading your preparation over several short sessions, your brain absorbs and stores the information naturally. When interview day comes, the details surface easily, helping you stay calm, confident and ready to impress. Small steps, strong results.

Simple interview tips that make a big difference.

The interview starts the moment you walk into reception. A handful of simple things leave a strong impression.

Be punctual

Aim to arrive early. Plan your route and check parking so you arrive calm, not flustered after a last-minute rush.

Do your research

Learn as much as you can about the company. Visit their website and review any brochures or published materials.

Prepare for paperwork

You may be asked to complete an application form at the interview, so think through likely questions and answers in advance.

Take forms seriously

Some candidates rush application forms or rely only on their CV. That rarely makes a good impression.

Show enthusiasm

Employers value candidates who are prepared and engaged. A little energy goes a long way.

Be organised

Bring your certificates, references and copies of your CV, neatly presented in a folder. A tidy approach stands out.

Stay positive

Do not focus on the other candidates. Concentrate on presenting the best version of yourself.

Dress smartly

First impressions matter, so dress the part for the role and the workplace.

Questions to ask at interview

Interviewers almost always ask if you have any questions. A simple, effective response is to ask about the role and show your interest. Even directly asking for the job shows confidence and commitment.

It is fine to ask about potential start dates. Avoid asking about salary, benefits or holiday if these have already been stated in the advert. For more detail, the National Careers Service interview guidance is a useful free resource.

After the interview

If you receive a rejection, stay positive. A short message thanking the employer for their time leaves a good impression and can keep the door open. Sometimes an offer to another candidate falls through and employers return to strong applicants for a second interview.

And if you receive an offer, congratulations, you have got the job.
